21st May 2018

This week in English we will be reading the story Jasper's Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth and Nick Inkpen. The children have been learning how to write instructions and will be writing their own instructions later on in the week on how to plant a seed.

In maths we have been recapping addition and subtraction. We have been using the number line to recap jumping forwards for addition and jumping backwards for subtraction. Later on in the week will be solving worded questions for addition and subtraction.  As part of your home learning you could ask your child worded questions such as- 'If I have 6 apples and you give me 5 more, how many have I got altogether?' and 'I have 12 biscuits and eat 3, how many do I have left?'.

After half term the children will be completing a quick phonics check. Over the next few weeks we will be sending home some real and alien words. We encourage the children to sound the words out and then blend them back together, for example, glump > g-l-u-m-p; fair > f-air; rescue > r-e-s-c-ue. They do not need to remember the words but be able to identify the sounds and blend them back together.

We have moved our Summer Reading Event to Thursday 7th June at 9am. This is our final year one event for the year.

With the ever changing weather please remember to send children in suitable clothing! In PE we are hoping to be outside as much as possible so please send in suitable outdoor shoes.

We also ask that you continue to read with your children at least five times a week. This can be a mixture of phonics, tricky words, reading book, magazines, library books, big talk. It does not have to be the school reading book but reading these regularly helps the children to become more confident and fluent readers.

We hope you all have a lovely half term break- we cannot believe that we only have one half term left!

14th May 2018

This week in English we have been reading The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr. We have been recapping on how to write a list using bullet points, learning how to write a list using a comma within a sentence and writing our own stories about an animal that came to tea. As part of your home learning you could encourage your child to write a list of...
  • favourite toys
  • food
  • phonic sounds
  • tricky words
  • books they enjoy

In maths we have been recapping fractions. We know that halving is sharing into two equal parts and quartering is sharing into four equal parts. We have been practicing sharing amounts of objects- for example 1/2 of 4 = 2. 1/4 of 8 -+2. As part of your home learning you could encourage your children to share their sweets, toys, or if they are lucky enough to have pocket money ask them things such as "If you spent half of your 10p- how much would you have left?".

8th May 2018

We hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday weekend and the glorious weather! Please remember to send children in with sun cream already applied (they can also bring some in to reapply but please write your child's name on the bottle) and a bottle of water.

Last week the children had a fantastic time at the Big Sing! The sun was shining, we all danced, sang our hearts out and got to listen to some fantastic music! Below are a few pictures...

In PE this half term we are learning tri-golf. The children are really enjoying learning how to hold the putter and chipper and know not to cross the red safety line!

In maths this week we have been recapping time and learning how to tell the time to half past the hour. We know that when the minute hand is on the 12 it is o'clock and when it is on the 6 (half way round the clock) then it is half past the hour. As part of your home learning this week you could recap on days on the week, months of the year, talk about your daily routine and the time things happen, look at watches and digital clocks.

In English this week we read the story The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The children sequenced the life-cycle of a butterfly and will be using time connectives such as first, next, then and finally to write about it. We have also been doing some paper craft to make and decorate butterflies.
