29th January 2018

In English this week we have continued to look at the traditional tale The Three Pigs. The children have been thinking about the best place to use a full stop and will be writing a post card to mummy pig to tell her what's happened since they left home! As part of your home learning please remember to read as often as possible and have a go at reading at writing the tricky words (these can be found in the back of the home learning book).

Comparing weights
Comparing weights

This week in maths we have been learning about weight. We have been comparing weights- things which are heavy and light, measuring using non-standard units such as unifix, lego and dominoes and we will also be making some cakes to use standard units of measurements (grams). As part of your home learning you could look at the labels on different food items- are they weighed  in grams (g) or kilograms (kg)? Can you put these in order from heaviest to lightest? You could also make a simple recipe and encourage your child to weigh out the ingredients. We have included a simple recipe you could try.

If you haven't already please don't forget to sign up for parent teacher interviews which take place the first week back after half term.

22nd January 2018

We had a fantastic time at the Norwich Cathedral yesterday and the children were extremely well behaved. We learnt lots of interesting facts- such as the Cathedral was built at the same time as Norwich Castle. Can your children remember any other facts from the day?

In maths this week we have been learning about capacity. We have been looking at containers that are full, nearly full, half full/empty, nearly empty and empty. On PurpleMash there is a paint challenge to complete. As part of your home learning you could look at different containers at home and look at the labels to see how much they hold in litres (l) and millilitres(ml). You could practice playing with cups in the bath or whilst washing up and fill them up and talk about how much water is in the cup.

This week in English we have been reading the traditional tale of The Three Little Pigs. The children have been retelling the story, sequencing the story and writing sentences to retell the story. We have been really focusing on using capital letters at the start of each sentence and a full stop at the end. As an extra challenge we encourage the children to think about using adjectives (describing words) to make their writing more interesting. For example- The big bad wolf. The little pink pigs.

If you haven't already please don't forget to sign up for parent teacher interviews which take place the first week back after half term.

15th January 2018

This week in English we have continued to look at the traditional tale Hansel and Gretel. The children have been using adjectives to describe the gingerbread house, designing their own gingerbread house and then writing about how they would build it!

In maths this week we have been learning about position and direction. We hope you all enjoy the maths event and this gives you lots of ideas on how to use maths terminology in everyday situations to help the children become more confident. As part of your home learning you could complete some of the activities from the maths event or use positional language when reading story books to talk about the pictures.

A few children have logged on to PurpleMash and completed the 2do's. Don't forget each child has their own log in which can be found in their Home Learnng book. https://www.purplemash.com/sch/garrick

Don't forget to save your work when it has been completed!

Each week in phonics the children learn a new sound (some times two) and we try to send home the sound with some example words each week. Please practice these with your children and see if they can spot the sounds within words. This can be recorded in the yellow reading record.

8th January 2018

Welcome back to the first full week of Spring term.

This week in English we have been reading the traditional tale Hansel and Gretel. The children will be sequencing the story, writing sentences and thinking about what makes a good sentence. As part of your home learning encourage the children to retell you the story.

In maths this week we will be recapping addition and subtraction and how to find the answer using a number line. We jump forwards to add and backwards to take away.

We are really fortunate to have Bryony from Slanted Dance in this term to teach the children a space themed dance. This week the children learnt some moves to help them travel into space and created rockets in small groups. P.E. for this half term will be on Tuesdays.

Our topic for this term is Out of this World - a topic web will be sent home in book bags with more details. If you log on to Purple Mash there are some different activities on the 2do section for your children to complete.

Each week in phonics the children learn a new sound (some times two) and we try to send home the sound with some example words each week. Please practise these with your children and see if they can spot the sounds within words. This can be recorded in the yellow reading record.

We encourage the children to choose their own reading books from their book band so that they can select books which appeal to them. Children are expected to read five times a week and this can be a variety of things including phonics, tricky words and books from home but please make sure that they are reading their book banded book regularly.
